Developing The Poultry Sector

Developing a strong, viable, and efficient poultry sector is a fundamental pillar of the food security strategy for Grenada and other OECS countries. This strategy is supported by the Food and Agricultural Organisation and the Inter American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture, which envisage “grow-out” operations involving small farmers developed around a “central commercial facility”.

The Council for Trade and Economic Development has classified “poultry” as a sensitive industry for the purposes of all external negotiations, thus limiting the impact of trade liberalization in the immediate to medium term. Moreover, the Government of Grenada secured a 100% bound rate in 2003 at the World Trade Organisation.

The introduction of the CSME in 2005 marked a new period for intra-regional competitiveness. The remaining barriers insulating regional markets, such as licenses and sanitary measures not founded on sound science, will eventually be removed. The CSME opens Grenada’s poultry industry to competition from other CARICOM countries experienced at producing for international standards. Regional veterinarians are already working on Protocols to liberalise intra-regional trade in poultry.

“To compete regionally, it is necessary for Grenada’s poultry industry to revolutionize its level of technology, achieve quantum leaps in quality, strengthen its management capacity, reduce costs and institute measures to transform the small producers into strong vibrant highly efficient economic units capable of supplying HAACP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certified meat,” according to Mr. Fitzroy James, general manager of the Marketing and National Importing Board.
