Comtrade
statistics for 2006 indicate China was the largest exporter at 81
million kilograms, followed by Germany at 19.6 million, Mexico at 25.4
million and Brazil at 14.6 million. Major importers were the USA at 126
million kilograms, Germany at 86 million and the UK at 29 million.
Regulations
vary among countries and trading blocs. Imports of honey and royal
jelly intended for human consumption may be imported from outside the
European Union (EU) provided they originate from an approved third
country (Grenada is not included in the approved third country list)
and/or from an EU approved plant; and are accompanied by appropriate
documentation, including commercial, animal and public health
certification. Additionally, honey must meet conditions stipulated by
EU Council Directives related to food safety.
For Canada, honey
and other bee products such as pollen, propolis, royal jelly and
honeycomb for human consumption may be imported from any country, and
there are no Animal Health restrictions or tariffs on imports.
Little
data is available on production and consumption in Grenada. GAIS
conducted a telephone survey of members of the Grenada Association of
Beekeepers, seeking the average production levels they expect to
achieve for 2007. Based on the responses, it is anticipated that the
average production from Association members for 2007 will be
approximately 7, 300 gallons. With the exception of a small quantity
exported regionally, Grenada’s honey crop is consumed locally. Imports
of honey into Grenada from outside CARICOM are subject to a 40% Common
External Tariff and a 25% General Consumption Tax.
As for retail
prices, Central Statistics Office figures indicate the average price of
a 750 ml. bottle ranged from $18.94 in 2002, $19.66 in 2003, $20 in
2004, $19.95 in 2005 and $21.22 in 2006.
As Grenada’s honey
sector develops there is need to collect reliable data on production
and output; for beekeepers and traders to become more familiar with
external markets requirements; and for stronger measures to prevent the
introduction of pests and diseases.
